This "first realistic social novel to appear in China" (Merriam - Webster Encyclopedia of Literature, c 1995) describes life in a polygamous household in twelfth century China and records the amorous exploits and grisly deaths of a rich merchant and Golden Lotus, his Fifth Lady.
