More than anything else, Billy Coleman wanted a pair of hunting dogs. Following his grandfather's (James Whitmore) advice, Billy scrimped and saved until he had enough money to purchase the two redbone hounds he longed for. Named for lovers carved in a tree, "Dan and Ann" immediately win the hearts of the entire family. Billy patiently trains them in the local sport of "coon" hunting, and they soon become the best in the state. But being "best" is not always enough - it is love given and returned that forms the basis of true caring and courage. --container.
