Summary: | "This exhibition of the work of Arkansas artist Eddie Lee Kendrick has developed according to the true sense of "community." Like most self-taught artists, Kendrick worked quietly on his own, without active involvement in the larger artistic mainstream of galleries and museums. He did, however, work within several communities that supported and nurtured him, and the works in this exhibition come primarily from lenders who had direct contact with him... It is fitting that this exhibition, organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, has been accomplished with the support and cooperation of the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, Kendrick's hometown. The project is a manifestation of the long-time commitment of both institutions to the field of contemporary American self-taught art. Sometimes called "folk" or "outsider" art, these works are produced by artists who have received little or no art training and, often, very little formal education"-- |
