Published 1935-1943 in two series: Reichsdenkmale and Landschaftsdenkmale, each with several consecutively numbered subseries. Suspended 1944-1953. Resumed publication in 1954, at which time the division into Reichsdenkmale and Landschaftsdenkmale was discarded in favor of 10 subseries and a Sonderreihe. The numbering of the Reichsdenkmale was kept as the comprehensive numbering of the series, except for the Sonderreihe. Most of the subseries of the Reichsdenkmale were continued as subseries of Das Erbe deutscher Musik, and the subseries numbering of each of these was continued. Some new subseries were added. The Sonderreihe, which includes new editions of former Landschaftsdenkmale titles, carries only its own numbering.
Beginning with v. 22 the subdivisions Reichsdenkmale and Landschaftsdenkmale have been dropped. The volume numbering of the Reichsdenkmale and of the subseries have been retained.
