Summary:Abstract: A reference text to help physicians better understand the pathogenesis of diseases, improve individual ethnic patient treatment, and provide an economically feasibile basis for screening populations for disease detection, explores the relationship of disease to ethnicity. The 18 text chapters, prepared by experts in their respective fields, are grouped among 2 principle themes, viz.: conceptual aspects of the relationship between human disease and culture; and diseases of specific populations. In this regard, the 7 chapters under the first theme includes considerations of: the biological race concept and disease; historical changes in the concepts of disease; the role of culture and biology in disease study; genetic polymorphism and human disease; geographical considerations of disease; the influence of political events and societal effects on disease; and special ethnic group considerations.
The second section of the text separateley covers disease of: the North American Indians; Latin America; the Japanese; the Chinese; Finland and Scandinavia; Britain and Western Europe; Eastern Europeans; black Africans; the Jews; isolated groups; and aging populations. Illustrations and tabular data are presented throughout the text, and literature citations are appended to each text chapter.
