520 |a Laqueur has returned to his excellent 1977 work, Terrorism, and completely revised and updated it in light of events of the past decade. The result is most worthwhile, a book that presents a sound, sensible analysis of terrorism that neither exaggerates nor dimininishes the phenomenon. Laqueur begins with the origins of the term, and comparisons with other forms of violent intimidation, but it is in the chapter on the "Philosophy of the Bomb'' that we come to the heart of the matter, with his delineation of the terrorist's vision of the cleansing power of violence and an absolutist view of right and wrong. Laqueur then explores the theories about and wellsprings of modern terrorist movements. A book full of erudition and insight and a most welcome addition to the expanding literature on terrorism. - Library Journal.
