Summary: | In the depths of the Rhine the Rhinemaidens guard the gold that, if it were forged into a ring, would bestow infinite power on its owner. Any such owner, however, must first renounce love. The dwarf Alberich, the god Wotan, and the giant Fafner, in succession, believe that such a prize is worth the struggle. Wotan, at least, is warned by the goddess Erda of the disastrous consequences that it would bring; the end of the world would be imminent if Wotan should put his trust in the power of the ring. Scarcely has Wotan given up the Ring to the giants than its terrible effect is seen: Fafner kills his brother Fasolt in order to claim the Ring as his own. An illusory peace descends as the gods enter Valhalla, their new castle. Wotan, the god of justice, has bought this peace through cunning and deceit.--Klaus Bertsich (p. 10 of program). |
