Description
Summary:Known as the court of last resort, the Supreme Court, where nine judges appointed for life make monumental decisions that govern our everyday lives, from the contents of the nation's daily newspapers to what we can do in the privacy of our own homes. With immense power and considerable mystery, the court of final appeal has helped author the history of America. One nation under law: Examines the creation of the court and follows it through the brink of the Civil War, paying particular attention to the fourth chief justice, John Marshall, and his successor, Roger Taney. A new kind of justice: Explores the issues before the court from the aftermath of the Civil War through the 1930s. This was a period of unprecedented economic growth as the nation industrialized but was also a time of unregulated work conditions. A nation of liberties: Focuses on the court's reaction to state and federal legislation on Bill of Rights freedoms, with special attention to the explosion of civil rights cases from the early 1940s to the present. The Rehnquist revolution: Details the court from the election of President Richard Nixon, through to the more recent Court of today. During this period one man put his stamp on the institution and solidified and enhanced the power of the Court in the modern era.

Marshall presided over one of the most famous cases before the Court while Taney presided over one of the most infamous.
Volume 2 : This video explores the issues before the Court during the period after the Civil War through to the late 1930's. It was a time of unprecedented economic growth and the conflict between capital and labor was rife. As corporations became more powerful they found an unlikely ally in the Supreme Court.
Volume 3 : This video focuses on the Court's reaction to state and federal legislation on Bill of Rights freedoms, with special attention to the explosion of civil rights cases from the early 1940s to the present. This program highlights the Warren Court as it confronts the issues of race, gender and religion.
Volume 4 :This video investigates how the Court has developed in more recent times, with a particular view to the development of the Court under the leadership of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. The program charts the rise in importance of the Court to become the institution most responsible for resolving the central questions of American life with special attention paid to the issues of law and order, the right to privacy and criminal rights.
