The review will establish the ways in which the traditional educational system has failed the student and the effects this has on society, and finally, it will explore successful methods utilized by alternative schools/alternative learning centers (ALCs). These methods have and can redesign the educational model and system in order to aid at-risk students in being more engaged, resilient and ultimately more successful which avoids those students having a detrimental effect on society as they age. High dropout rates coupled with increasing mental health and chemical abuse issues call for reevaluation of our educational system and an examination of why so many seem to be slipping through the proverbial crack. In the process of examining these areas, this literary review will also take into account the criteria schools utilize when identifying a student as at-risk; and the strategies, such as enhancing school experiences and engaging students, thus challenging them to stay in school, used to combat the cycle that often comes with a label such as at-risk."--leaf 4.
