Some of the important lessons learned in the evaluation are: 1) start-up support; 2) unrestricted funding; 3) funder requirements; 4) individual benefit in participating organizational activities; 5) role of self-esteem; 6) indicators of improvement; 7) improving the enabling external environment; 8) women nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) role in encouraging the control by women of their fertility; and 9) empowerment impact. The study concludes that women organizations are important vehicles for women's empowerment and in the understanding of reproductive health issues. The following recommendations are: 1) "hands-off" manner of support to women organizations; 2) support and facilitate networking of women NGOs; 3) support governments and national NGOs that made reproductive health and family planning services accessible to women; and 4) donors and governments should provide support to women NGOs as well as women empowerment concerns outside reproductive health.
