520 | |a "From the stirring martial tunes of William Billings to the folk-rock storm of Bob Dylan, the American popular song has undergone as many changes and developments as America herself. Here David Ewen, once described by Time magazine as 'music's interpreter to the American people,' explores the whole history and evolution of American popular music from 1776 to the present day. Through the biographies, personal portraits, and critical evaluations of thirty of its leading creators--lyricists as well as composers--the reader is given a perspective on how the American popular song developed over the years and gains an insight into the birth and evolution of the media (theater, radio, television, movies, etc.) in which these songs came into being. Within the biographies, such basic song styles as the national ballad, the war song, songs about the Negro, ragtime songs, the blues, show tunes, movie tunes, and the songs of protest are described, while more than passing notice is given to the changing song lyric and the men who brought about this change. Thus, through the story of William Billings, the reader learns how America's first war songs, songs of the Revolutionary Period, came to be written. Through the biography of Henry Russell, the reader learns the origin and early history of the popular sentimental ballad. In the same manner, Stephen Foster's story reveals the history of the minstrel show, George Frederick Root's--the ballads of the Civil War period, Victor Herbert's--the early history of the American operetta, George M. Cohan's--the American musical comedy, and so forth. The technique of arranging the creators in chronological order provides the reader with a quick means of reference and enables him to scan the development of a song style through the artists and periods that are of interest to him. In addition, each man's career is explored from apprenticeship to maturity, thus placing him in the context of his times and of the composers working around him. The result is a crisply-written, exceedingly knowledgeable work of encyclopedic scope and range that discusses and explains, as comprehensively as possible, the currents and crosscurrents in the evolution of American popular music."--Dust jacket. | ||
