Description
Summary:Abstract: Infant care and feeding practices in the South Pacific, and associated attitudes and beliefs, are examined in this collection of professional papers that make up one volume of a nutritional anthropology series. Practices, attitudes, and beliefs are described within their social, cultural, and physical contexts for a number of groups in the South Pacific--Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Western Samoa. An introductory commentary addresses the importance of cultural perspectives on infant care and feeding. Presented papers consider the following topics: methods of infant feeding and associated problems; causes and timing of separation of mothers and their infants; restrictions on activities or diet for mothers or infants; and physical, social, and cultural environment of lactating women. A series of three concluding commentaries discusses 1) infant health and nutrition, 2) the relationship between infant feeding and women's work, and 3) and anthropological perspective on infant feeding. The volume emphasizes that behaviors cannot be taken out of their socioculturalcontext. Presented material should be useful to various health care practitioners and health planners, as well as anthropologists and social scientists involved in research related to maternal and infant behavior.
